About Sani Pass
Sani Pass climbs 1,332 vertical meters up the Drakensberg Mountains. It starts in South Africa and ends at the Lesotho border. The 9-kilometer dirt road features steep 1:3 gradients and dramatic hairpin bends.
South African law strictly dictates that only 4x4 vehicles can drive the pass. Two-wheel drive vehicles will be turned away at the border post. Most visitors book guided day tours from Underberg to navigate the rugged terrain safely.
At the 2,876-meter summit, you enter the Kingdom of Lesotho. Here, you can visit a traditional Basotho village or get a drink at Sani Mountain Lodge. Read more about Sani Summit or check What to Wear before your trip.
